Finally… it is done. The epic wait is over my friends. Now you know how I create my lipsticks and lipglosses… Because here it is.
Ok… so you wanna make lipstick / lip gloss for the Sims 3.
If you haven’t got GIMP and the GIMP PLUGINS, get them. You cannot do this tutorial without them. For further information, refer to:
If you’ve never used CTU before, PLEASE read my Hair Retextures Tutorial FIRST. It will make things so much easier for you to follow.
My method is a little dodgey – I’m not an artist, I’m a pixel manipulator. I use base images and manipulate them to look good in-game. Let me explain.
I will use this lipgloss image as my base image.
Yes, it’s an image of my own lips lol A few things you must learn before attempting to use my method – you must have MOSTLY closed lips (unless you want the toothy lip look hahaha) and they must be fairly straight-on, facing the camera. Beautyswatch.com.au have the best lips for this.
Grab what you need. Open up CTU. Select Adult, Female, Makeup. Select the last Lipstick in the list. Then Design, textures, add new design, add new blank. You should see a list with Face Overlay, Face Specular, and Mask available to be edited. Click on the string of letters and numbers to the right and click the ‘Find’ button, then ‘Export’. Export the Face Overlay, Face Specular and Mask files.
Open up your exported files in GIMP. Copy and paste your base image onto the Face Overlay. Like so:
Too big! Resize the image by selecting Layer, Scale Layer from the menus at the top of the screen. I usually resize to 300 in width, but these lips are thin, so I’ll resize to 400.
Go to the Colours drop down menu, then Desaturate. Select the Average option. Hit ok. It now looks like this:
Now position the lips over the original by using the move tool in the box to the right.
Now select from the box to the left in the Layers section: Mode, Value. As shown.
Notice how I reposition the lips so that the shiniest part (the whitest part) is very close to the bottom? The more you do lipglosses the more you will realise where to place features and why. (This isn’t the best texture to use for lips. It’s going to look pretty crap. But that’s ok. This is just a tutorial).
Once you have your lip gloss in the position you want, click on Layer, Anchor Layer. Now SAVE 😀
Ok, so you’ve just done your Face Overlay. Well done!
Now we need to adjust the brightness. Go to Colour, Levels. As shown.
Notice how my lips now look. Obviously you’ll have to adjust the levels differently to me because you’ll be using a different texture. But try and make them very bright. This is for the Face Overlay.
Hit CTRL + S again so we can save this thing. Ta-da! Face Overlay is finished! 😀
Now hit CTRL + Z. This will undo the brightness. You’re like: WTF? She wants me to undo what I just saved? Well yes, I do. We now need to make the Face Specular 😀 As long as you don’t accidentally save again, your Face Overlay will remain bright.
Hit CTRL + A and CTRL + C. Open up your Face Specular file. Hit CTRL + A, and DELETE!!! Now fill with black. As shown. Make sure the two rectangles I circled are as shown so that you’ve got black selected as your base colour 😄
Hit CTRL + V. Now go over to the box to the left and change the Layer Mode to Hard Light.
See? You’ll want to now select Layers, Anchor Layer. Hit CTRL + S. Our Face Specular is done 😉
Now for the MASK. Now… this is very individually based. Once you learn what you’re doing you can design your Control however you like. This is how *I* do a Control / MASK. It’s not necessarily the best way, but it’s my way.
Go back to your Face Overlay. Go to Colours, Levels. Decrease the middle slider until you can see just a little bit of shine on the lips. Like so.
Now select Colours, Colour to Alpha. We want to change the white in this image to black.
Now, click on the white rectangle. It will show this screen. Now drag the following slider down to black, as circled.
Hit ok, and ok. Ta-da! You now only have the shine of the lips left. Go to Colours, Colorify. Select Light Blue (Turquoise) and hit ok. Now hit CTRL + A, CTRL + C.
Open up your MASK file. Hit CTRL + A, and DELETE 😀
Now fill it with red. Then hit CTRL + V. You should get this:
Go to Layers, Anchor Layer. Hit CTRL + S. Ta-da! Your MASK is done 😀
That was the hard part done. Now it’s all smooth sailing. Go back into CTU and click on the string of numbers next to Face Overlay. Hit ‘Replace’. Replace it with YOUR face overlay. Then replace the Face Specular with YOUR Face Specular. Then replace the Mask with YOUR Mask.
Change the top two tints to red and tint C to white. To change tints, double click on the string of numbers and letters next to the tint. I get the following lipgloss:
Don’t forget to name the mesh in the Meshes tab. Then SAVE 😀
In game it looks like this:
As you can see, I need to play around with it a lot more. Or choose a new base image altogether. That’s why it’s very good to practice, so that you get faster and can learn placement of shine much better 🙂
